The (Increasingly Inaccurately Titled) Dublin Trilogy (Series) by Caimh McDonnell - 8/10

Updated: Mar 20, 2025

A series of comedic mystery novels set mainly in modern Ireland (though some of the later books make even that description inadequate). Characters, circumstances, and tone range quite a bit from book to book, so it's hard to describe, but they are, overall, entertaining and well written.

At the moment of my writing this, there are 15 books which can be grouped into 3 or 4 distinct series, so it's a bit difficult to summarize (not quite as convoluted as Discworld, but give it a few years and he might get there). A Man With One of Those Faces is the first book, and a good starting point I think - I have included the author's graphic map of suggested reading order below.

*McDonnel is one of those authors who thinks that the best way to convey realism is to come up with new ways to thwart and frustrate his characters, which does bother me a bit, but clearly hasn't stopped me from reading his books.

**Morgan Jones's narration is fantastic.
