The Horseback Librarians by Jane Yolen - 8/10

Updated: Apr 13, 2025

This historical fiction account shares about the living conditions of Appalachian America during the Great Depression through the lens of a traveling librarian sharing the joy of books.

This book is certainly a niche read for children who already express a love of reading, but the story is well developed and Anna Mary, the librarian, shares many book recommendations (along with the reasons for her choices) throughout the book, which gave it an extra flare.
