The Cats in Krasinski Square by Karen Hesse - 9/10

Updated: Jan 19, 2025

This book provides a glimpse into the difficult history of the Holocaust by bringing to life a true story of how cats were used to enable the successful smuggling of food into a Jewish ghetto.

Told through the eyes of a young girl who befriends the local stray cats, readers get a glimpse of some of the trials and at least one of the small victories of those fighting against the Nazi occupiers. This is definitely a heavy book, and will likely need to be part of a larger conversation, but it is well executed and the writing is excellent (with engaging rhythm and repeating refrains).
