First Night of Howlergarten by Benson Shum - 9/10

Updated: Jan 19, 2025

A cute yet poignant tale about a young girl discovering her inherent self-worth.

Sophie is nervous for her first day at howlergarten (kindergarten for werewolves) because she fears that the other kids will not accept her if she is unable to transform when the moon rises. However, she quickly befriends another nervous peer, and they discover how much they have in common with their classmates.

*I think this book is elevated from good to great by the fact that Sophie's acceptance happens before the reveal of whether or not she will transform. The fact that she finds peace in the midst of uncertainty is an important witness.
