Eyes That Speak to the Stars by Joanne Ho - 10/10

Updated: Jan 19, 2025

This poetic book invites readers to reflect on the importance that what makes us unique makes us beautiful and connects us in a special way with our families and ancestors.

After a friend at school draws attention to the shape of this young Asian boy's eyes, his father tells him that their eyes are special because they "rise to the skies and speak to the stars" - and he begins to think about how each of his family members are shaped by their cultural heritage. While I imagine this book would carry particular meaning for children of Asian lineage, who may have had similar conversations with their peers, it also serves as a framework to inspire children from any ethnicity to reflect on what defines members of their own family and how that may be tied to their ancestors or culture.
